After a night in the Pigsties anchorage in Recherche Bay, which was lovely and flat despite the swell outside, we set off early for Port Davey.
The first few hours was a cracking sail at up to 9 knots with the wind aft of the beam. We passed a few wooden boats on their way around too, then lost the wind and had to motor or motor sail the rest. Ah well, at least it wasn’t blowing 35knots! Its hard to put into words how beautiful the coastline is around the bottom of Tasmania - simply stunning and each new headland revealed yet another postcard picture. Unfortunately, I’ll have to share these later as not enough data at the moment!
We spent our first night anchored up at the Davey River bar, ready to make an assault up the river in the dinghy the next morning. We nailed the weather - it was blue skies, flat calm and we had a great run up the river to the first gorge. We can’t get to the next ones due to the rapids, but we had a stunning time. Again, photos to follow.
On returning to the boat, we set off to enter Bathurst Harbour through the narrow channel. Its hard to even see the channels from a distance, but once in its easy to follow. We’ve anchored up at Ila Bay alongside our friends Tom and Cristie on Running Tide. We had seem them briefly in Hobart but its good to be on the water with them again - probably the last time the two boats were together was in Samoa!
The next few days sees some weather coming with some strong NW/W/SW winds. It is the roaring forties after all! We’ll hide out here in a few of the lovely anchorages and do some walking and exploring
