Dugong bay was an incredible spot - almost totally surrounded by high hills, it was utterly calm inside. The centre of the bay dried out in quite large areas and there was lots of mangroves - though we saw no crocs. We did see an inquisitive tawny nurse shark circling around, which was nice.
The sunset was incredible.
We explored the mangroves and channels a bit, but didn’t get beyond a rock bar (tide timings being somewhat guesstimated). However, we decided that we’d try and get to Horizontal Falls a day or so earlier - so this afternoon we took the falling tide out of the bay and anchored outside. The narrow entrance into Dugong Bay can be quite a fight against the current, but we want the tide with us towards Talbot bay. We’ll have a 3nm trip against the tide tomorrow, then an 8nm ride with the current into Talbot Bay.
One of the things you see often when moving here is lots of very flat or alternatively boiling water. I’m used to see this in other tidal races, but it’s a little unnerving when you’re in an un-surveyed area and you see the odd water. Is it because its shallow, or just tidal? Even when we’re passing over an area we passed before - its unnerving :) We had that coming out of the bay today, but now its almost low tide at our anchorage.
