Dawn at Raft point was a beautiful as the sunset, and I soon spotted a log-erdile headed our way…
We took the tide across the bay to Red Cone inlet, and anchored in the creek. We knew we’d not have enough water at low water, but the intention was to just stay the day and take the tide back out in the afternoon.
A swift dinghy ride up the creek (for 3 miles) took us to Ruby Falls. On the way up, Nina spotted a croc lazing in the river, which submerged as we passed. It was totally disinterested in us. Further up, the mangrove gives way to an impressive rock gorge which has clearly been carved out by huge volumes of water coming down the creek during the wet seasons.
As we reached the falls, we knew our timing was off - the lower pool floods at high tide on springs, so you can take the dinghy right in. We had to moor the dinghy a bit before the lower pool and clamber over the rocks in the slippery mud. Friends from a boat Slow Motion were already there and had swum in the lower pool - we didn’t fancy that plan because it floods, so can get crocs! Instead, we headed up and over teh rocks to the small pool above the falls, described as a spa. It was beautiful.
The lower croc pool…
It was a fantastic swimming hole, and a lovely trip. The wind did pick up though, so the trip back to Raft Point is a little more bouncy….
