Waiting on Weather - pays off!
by Rick at 06:12, 2022-07-09 (day 2988)

Yesterday we didn’t do much other than boat jobs. Cooking, cleaning etc. However, the weather is starting to look interesting. By that, I mean interesting enough that we should think about moving to the NE corner of Viti Levu (the main island) ready to jump to the Lau group. Thursday to Saturday are good days to sail SE, and its about 30hrs across to Fulaga (pronounced Fulanga).

So this morning, we raised sail and headed south. We had a cracking sail in 15-20knots of E wind, giving us good boat speed. We landed a decent sized tuna which is now in the fridge and freezer. We saw the dolphins that we’d seen on the way up to Blue Lagoon again, in the same place. Very nice.

We made very good time as far as Waya island, and we know that after that, you lose the wind due to the massive wind shadow from Viti Levu. We see this every day in the forecast and sure enough, today was the same.

So the second part of the day was motor-sailing, then motoring. We made it to Musket Cove in time for dusk. Drinks have been prepared and we’re enjoy a relaxing evening.

We’ll try and get a dive in here in the next couple of days, then over to Denarau to reprovision and refuel. Then the long motor around the top of Viti Levu (see previous comments about wind shadow).
