Nereids Rally - River Lodge
Nereids Rally - River Lodge
by Rick at 14:38, 2015-10-16 (day 530)
It's hard to imagine how abrupt the transition from rainforest to Savannah is, but it occurs like a binary switch. It's much clearer from the air though. Rock View lodge is owned by an Englishman called Colin and he makes you feel very much at home. This despite our visit coinciding with their music festival. Alas the timings for the rally meant we couldn't stay for the music, but we did get to meet som of the artists and see the rehearsals. It's a great place and we wouldn't hesitate to go back. Ideally we'd be able to see the whole festival next time as I really enjoy folk music, and this was music from indigenous peoples throughout the world. It was bizarre to find out that the Native American guy (J.J. Kent) had lived in Reading for a while!

We had a very pleasant dinner with the family and other residents before retiring. The generators went off at 10:30pm so limited lights and no fans after that!

Next morning we were up early to head up the hill behind the lodge for some wildlife. We saw plenty of birds, but alas a young family came up the climb after us, with their noisy kids, so we missed out on seeing the monkeys. Not to worry, the views were great anyway On our return, had some breakfast and had time to watch more rehearsals and preparations for the festival. The hotel manager came to find us and buy us lunch from the food stalls as the hotel kitchen was shut for the festival. About 5 minutes before out flight we were collected and taken to the departure lounge. (yes, no checking - they knew we were flying - so I think this is our record shortest time in an airport before departure on a scheduled flight!). We got there just in time to see out plane land. From Rock View we flew to Ogle, by Georgetown for a whistle stop tour there.
