One way to get diesel here is to meet a supply ship. They will sometimes allow you alongside to take diesel but often only if you want a lot (300litres or more). Otherwise you can buy a barrel of diesel which holds 200 litres. Much like LPG, you have to have an empty barrel for them to fill/exchange. The barrels aren’t cheap - so this makes things a little more complex. Fortunately, we’ve discovered Cafe Jo-Jo who provide a number of services. First and foremost, its the only place to get a lunch and with free, working, wifi its quite popular. However they also provide diesel, LPG and petrol - so we availed ourselves of 100l of diesel yesterday and will probably get another 100l before we leave. At 200XPF (about £1.40/litre) its not cheap, but we are pretty remote so its hardly surprising.
LPG is more taxing because of the connector problem. We tried hard to find out what connector was in use here before we arrived, but couldn’t find any certain details. Well, now we know - its a G8 21.8mm left-hand female nut that we need. Fortunately, our GasBOAT kit from Will Hayward Engineering has exactly that (adapter 4012). So we’re good to go - we’ll “buy” a cylinder and use it to refill ours, and maybe a few other cruisers' cylinders - then we’ll use it as our main source of LPG until just before we leave French Polynesia. At which point, we’ll return the cylinder to get our deposit back (in theory - this can sometimes prove “difficult").
