Today we went for an explore in 5 man creek, named after a well known rock art picture. We needed a reasonable rise of tide, so a couple of hours before high water, we headed off in the dinghy.
Usual deal, stern anchor the dinghy on an endless line out in the middle of the creek and then scramble ashore. The dinghy is then pulled out to safety whilst we explore the rocks.
Its quite interesting to try and find the rock art. More people tracking than anything, as there are no sign posts. The usual deal out here is a little pile of rocks as a cairn to mark the track periodically, but they are often not obvious. This time it was quite a scramble up the slope until we found the plateau and eventually (after we found some art ourselves) we found some tracks to follow.
The rock art was quite spectacular. We did find the 5 men in a canoe, eventually.
We also found a huge shark under one of the overhangs.
There was plenty of other rock art too. Some nice Gwion Gwion tassel figures, as well as plenty of creatures. Too many for the limited bandwidth we have available at the moment.
As it was mid-afternoon, and very hot - we rested under some of the overhangs and had a drink before heading back across the plateau. Its striking how many of the rocks have been undercut by erosion and seem impossibly balanced.
After 2hrs of exploration we were back in the dinghy headed home. We’ll repeat tomorrow at 4 man creek and maybe the nearby escarpment to see if we can find more.
