Mission success!

Having failed to find the rock art at 4 man creek, and along the escarpment, today we though we’d try another site, on the way out of the Winyalkan anchorage.

With the strong SE winds no longer featuring in the forecast, we motored a few miles over to Wollaston Island and dropped the anchor. The guide said it was an easy walk after a bit of a scramble, but we’re doubting either our ability or the guides!

However, this one wasn’t too bad at all! We dinghied to the beach, and then scrambled up the rocks towards the spinnifex bank described in the guide. There was an obvious path through, but the view back to the beach was quite nice.

From there, it was a short walk through the spikey spinnifex grass over to some rocks. Initially we couldn’t find the art and hunted around the northern side, but in the end we found it on the southern end of the rocks.

Not sure what they mean - the headress and lack of mouth on the main figure suggests a god (who wouldn’t need to speak to communicate). A Wandjina style figure.

This one is similar, though the white may mean an ancestor.

Tomorrow we move north up the peninsula, probably pretty slowly due to the light winds we are promised. The sailors lot - always complaining about the wind, never the right amount and never from the right direction!
