Ushant

We departed Starehole Bay before first light, with the intention of getting to L'aberwrac'h or at least across the Channel to somewhere in Brittany. There was wind, which was good - so we sailed, albeit it slowly, under gennaker. However the wind was light and fickle, so we changed sail plan a few times until at about 3pm, we gave up. The wind dropped and dropped until we had this in the middle of the channel: At this point we fetched the weather forecasts again (via HF) and as there was no mention of fog, we decided we'd aim for Ushant or Ile d'Ouessant as the French know it. Not having been there before, we decided we'd arrive in daylight and that Lampaul Bay would probably be best. So we'd punch the tide a bit and be slow, but no worries.

It was a wonderful night. Clear skies, and plenty of lighthouses to keep us company as our speed fell to 1knot SOG. We just kept on ticking over, arriving at the mouth of the bay perfectly for first light.

It was at this point that we see that the tiny swell had really picked up and was rolling into the bay. We both looked at each other - had we made a mistake? We decided to go and look, and the further up the bay we progressed the less the swell until we reached the moorings in almost flat conditions. Tired, we picked up a mooring, sorted out the boat, turned around and saw the mist just rolling down into the bay. The photo doesn't do it justice, but it never got any worse than that - so the forecast was right! phew. Went ashore later, in glorious sunshine. Ouessant is a lovely place, definitely worth putting in the effort to visit rather than skipping past down the Chanel du Four as most do. Of course, I say that not because there is a lighthouse museum on the island - but it helps! Creac'h is one of the most powerful lighthouses in the world- and we'd seen it the night before for quite some time, so it was nice to get a bit closer to an "old friend" :) There's also the amusingly named "Le Stiff" complex on the north of the island.
