Making good speed
Making good speed

We are making good speed towards Tahanea. So much so that with 65 miles to go we have begun to manage our speed. Being only 220 miles for the trip, we knew that it would be 2 nights as trying to arrive at dusk is difficult. Far easier to aim for dawn on a 3rd day and slow down than aiming for the next afternoon and find yourself with an additional 12 hours of darkness to wait. It's particularly hard to loiter outside Tahanea because the pass is on the eastern side, which make it a lee shore, unlike Amanu where we had an easy punt and drift regime. For Tahanea we'd need to actively sail and be very aware of the reef at all times.

We knew we could have left Hao later in the day but that was confounded by the pass current, so we had plenty of time to make the passage.

So after lunch, we furled the gennaker under which we had been doing 6 knots easily (peaking at 10.7 overnight!) and unfurled a bit of genoa. We are now making a steady 4.5knots and we know we can unleash the gennaker again if we need to. In fact, from here we could motor under 1 engine as the required speed is only 4.1 knots now and dropping. We will furl more sail as we get closer - we want to be making way so we don't slide west in the current.

The good news is that the fishing drought is over. We caught a very tasty wahoo just before lunch - in fact it rapidly become lunch with more going into the freezer. This is the first fish we've caught on our lines since Las Perlas, over 4000nm away!
